1977年新潟県生まれ。2000年多摩美術大学絵画科油画専攻卒業。グラフィックデザイナー、美術科教諭等の職を経て、2012年より奄美大島に在住。当店のほか、田中一村記念美術館(奄美大島)、泰明画廊(東京)、かわうそ画廊(東京)などでグループ展。神戸アートマルシェ2024出品。第２０回奄美を描く美術展大賞(2021年)。月刊美術主催「美術新人賞デビュー」に2022、23年連続入選。
Born in Niigata Prefecture in 1977. 2000 Graduated from Tama Art University, majoring in oil painting. After working as a graphic designer and art teacher, he has been living in Amami Oshima since 2012. In addition to our gallery, he has held group exhibitions at the Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum (Amami Oshima), Taimei Gallery (Tokyo), and Kawauso Gallery (Tokyo). He won the 20th Amami Art Exhibition Grand Prize (2021). He has been selected for the 2022 and 2023 consecutive year of the "Art Newcomer Award Debut" sponsored by Monthly Bijutsu.

    青木薫は奄美大島在住の作家で、その風景を基本的には描きますが、民俗や死生観にまで掘り下げて構想し、制作するところに独自性があります。小規模な個展ではありますが、この機会に是非ご高覧いただけましたら幸いです。
    AOKI Kaoru is an artist based on Amami Oshima; while his work is fundamentally rooted in the island's landscapes, his unique approach lies in conceptualizing and creating pieces that delve deep into local folklore and perspectives on life and death. Although this is a small-scale solo exhibition, I hope you will take this opportunity to view his work.

    作家ステートメント｜Statment

    　私が暮らす奄美大島では、海の彼方にネリヤカナヤと呼ばれる他界があるとされています。全ての命はその場所からやって来て、やがてそこへ帰る。生と死は同じ円環の一部であって、連続している。島人達は古来こうした世界観に基づいて身の回りの自然を捉え、共に生きてきました。今も年間を通して行われる数多くの儀礼や祭祀、唄や踊りの中に、その集合的記憶が宿されています。

    　私はこの島で目にするものを、単に「南国の美しい風物」として描こうとは思いません。そこに向けられる島人達の眼差し、広大な自然の中で人間を相対化するその意識の在り方にこそ、描くべき本質があると考えているからです。いつの日か私の作品が、無意識の古層から繋がる伝承という大河の一雫となることを願って。

    On Amami Oshima, where I live, it is believed that there exists an otherworld known as "Neriyakanaya" far across the sea. All life originates there and eventually returns there; life and death are parts of the same continuous cycle. Since ancient times, the islanders have viewed the nature around them through this worldview and lived in harmony with it. That collective memory still resides within the many rituals, ceremonies, songs, and dances performed throughout the year.

    I have no intention of depicting what I see on this island merely as "beautiful tropical scenery." I believe the true essence worth capturing lies in the gaze the islanders cast upon their surroundings—in that mindset which places human existence in perspective against the backdrop of vast nature. I hope that, one day, my work might become a single drop in the great river of tradition that flows from the deep, unconscious strata of the past.
