From gallery
Mitten is an artist who depicts the kind of stylized, "manga-esque" young female figures often seen in comics; however, what makes the work unique is that certain parts of the image are rendered with striking, photorealistic detail. The juxtaposition of these two styles creates a mutual defamiliarization effect, prompting the viewer to reconsider the nature of realism and manga-style stylization. We hope you will take this opportunity to view the exhibition.
No matter what I am doing or who I am with, time flows on without stopping. Reflecting on the ups and downs of life—and the fact that it inevitably comes to an end—compels me to think deeply about the meaning of existence. And for me, creating art gives my life profound meaning.
When I started drawing eleven years ago, it was a form of escapism—a desperate, grasping effort—conceived by someone who was on the verge of dropping out of school. I drew simply out of a love for things that were cute or dark. I had hardly any friends, so I merely posted my artwork on social media. Now that I am thirty, I have a job and people around me, yet I continue to draw. Even though I have gained some confidence and found a place in society, a fundamental sense of impermanence and emptiness remains at my core—the realization that time marches on and nothing is truly certain. While my style of expression has gradually evolved, the urge to draw has, if anything, only grown stronger.
But what I want to engage with now is not standing still, but rather resisting the passage of time and the inevitability of loss. What is truly important? What is genuinely beautiful? If things must come to an end, I want at least my life—and the lives of those around me—to be beautiful. To realize that, I need painting—the very act of creating art.
The title "Harvest" is drawn from the name of a hotel where I used to stay with my family every summer during my childhood. The word implies a gathering of crops or the fruition of efforts. Those trips—which I once anticipated with such delight—have now become, for me, a symbol of beauty. The girl in the painting, too, appears to have aged since those days. What meaning does this long process of reflection hold for me?What can this girl—and the painting itself—actually do? Through this exhibition, I am exploring that very question.
